Sleeping at Last – Atlas: Enneagram

For all those of you, who’ve never heard of Sleeping at Last: they’re brilliant, amazing, can’t say enough good things about their music. But seriously, check it out, it changed my life, album called “Atlas: Space” is one of my all time favourites. But it’s not the album I want to write about today.

Don’t know, how many of you are familiar with the term Enneagram. It’s not a horoscope kind of thing, where everything depends on the universe, planet alignment and the person writing it. According to Enneagram Studies, stemming from the Greek words ennea (nine) and grammos (a written symbol), the nine-pointed Enneagram symbol represents nine distinct strategies for relating to the self, others and the world. Each Enneagram type has a different pattern of thinking, feeling and acting that arises from a deeper inner motivation or worldview. Learning about these patterns fosters greater understanding through a universal language that transcends gender, religion, nationality and culture. While we are all unique, we share common experiences.

There are some weird tests you need to pay for in order to know which number you belong to, the simple and easy way it to calculate it from your date of birth. My number is 8, which brings me to the main topic – 9 brilliant songs based on the Enneagram types.

Dissecting some of the passages from song 8 of the collection I do like how accurate they are. I’m not going to bore you with my demons and all that’s wrong with me, but I had to grow up way too quick.

I was little, I was weak and perfectly naive
And I grew up too quick

I won’t let you in.
I swore never again-
I can’t afford, no,
I refuse to be rejected

All of us get disappointed at some point of our lives and we all deal with it differently. For me it was always a hit straight in the heart, forcing me to have my shields up, all the time.

I want to break these bones
‘Til they’re better
I want to break them right
And feel alive

At the same time I want to trust, open and be free. Do you see the issue? I for sure do… It takes a lot of work to let go of your demons, but the prize is, you get out stronger.

I’ll shake the ground with all my might
I will pull my whole heart
Up to the surface
For the innocent, for the vulnerable
I’ll show up on the
Front lines with a purpose
And I’ll give all I have,
I’ll give my blood, I’ll give my sweat-
An ocean of tears will
Spill for what is broken
I’m shattered porcelain,
Glued back together again
Invincible like I’ve never been

The song is vulnerable, emotional, rough. It’s everything I would expect from Sleeping at Last. If you’re just a bit curious, if the whole theory of Enneagram, your number and its corresponding song is as accurate, as 8 is for me, go for it!
